Tucked away between Vienna and Salzburg along the Danube River is the charming Baroque city of Linz, Austria. Stroll through the cobblestone streets, old city alleys and modern flare of the beautiful northern region.
Linz offers travelers a unique look into modern luxury and street art with old-world architecture, endless natural beauty and sweeping views of the Alps. Take in the sites, sounds and tastes of Austria through the quaint and inviting town of Linz with the family.
For all things art, culture and history, Linz is a one-stop shop. Peruse interactive electronic arts and exhibits at the impressive Ars Electronica Center, located next to Neues Rathaus Magistrat Linz — New City Hall of Linz — along the Danube River. Just by looking at the floor-to-ceiling glass building, you’ll know you’re in for something special.
Cross the river into Linz’s historic area complete with the Old Town Hall, museums, concert halls and incredibly ornate cathedrals. Grab a quick bite with a view along the river at Lentos Restaurant before exploring the modern art of Lentos Museum of Art.
Keep the artistic momentum going with a stop at the literature museum, Literaturmuseum und Literatur Hausen; the historic park and museum Schlossmuseum Linz; and modern art museum Landesgalerie — each more beautiful than the next, both inside and out.
Enjoy some live music and theater performances during a show at the Landerstheater or Brucknerhaus. The world-class theater and concert hall both boast an impressive lineup of shows for kids, families and tourists of all ages. Needless to say, you’ll have your fair share of arts and culture to choose from in Linz.
Take in the sites downtown and explore the city’s 17th-century architecture, including the Baroque and bygone beauty of Alter Dom — a significant church and landmark. Stroll from site to site taking full advantage of family photo opportunities at any of the many tourist attractions throughout the city.
With Linz straddling the Danube River, your family may find themselves crossing back and forth, from old to new, taking in all the sites the city has to offer. Hit the town shopping artisan shops, or pop in cafes and restaurants to refuel as you go. Families with casual tastes and small kids enjoy Wirtshause Keintzel for cozy dining and authentic cuisine and Klosterhof for outdoor seating and ambiance.
Check out Linz and see what local events, celebrations and festivals are going on during your trip. Feel like a local with a trip to Austria’s friendly, less-traveled city.
