The dead of winter is just beginning to set in, meaning it’s the perfect time to start planning outdoor adventures for when the weather finally breaks. With a world filled with places to explore, these spots should be at the top of your list this spring:
In Georgia, consider taking the family to Lake Winfield Scott. This lake is perfect for an early-spring foray and is open year-round. As an added bonus, the recreational area includes a cabin, if tent-style roughing it isn’t your idea of fun. The lake provides a beautiful backdrop and several campsite options, from barebone tents to electric-equipped plots.
Still in the deep south, consider visiting Sam Houston Jones State Park in Louisiana. This state park is well-loved locally and perfect for camping. It offers plenty of campsites for guests looking for all kinds of different experiences. These sites offer the backwoods experience, while still accessible. The park also has hiking trails, boat rentals, fishing and more.
A bit of a different vibe, Tishomingo State Park, in Mississippi, sits in the foothills of the state’s Appalachian mountains. The park offers a few options, like the other parks mentioned above. At the same time, it provides a different aesthetic. Tishomingo State Park evokes Appalachia, complete with dense, green woods. Guests can stay in RVs, cabins and primitive campsites.

Moving out west, we come across some different terrain. Bryce Canyon National Park, in Utah, is a great destination for camping and is completely different from any other park or lake on our list. The park has two campgrounds and is open year-round, making it another good option for families. If the sites don’t do it for you, there is plenty of backcountry camping as well.
California is home to some beautiful nature. Castle Rock State Park combines beauty with challenging hikes. The park’s campsite is a 2.5-mile hike from the parking area. You will also need to carry all your own water, food and supplies into the camp. This is not one for the faint of heart, but for families with experience hiking, it’s worth considering this spring.
