Family travelers looking for palm-lined beaches and a Caribbean vibe without the complication of passports should consider traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands for a winter fun-in-the-sun vacation. Beaches and water sports aren’t the only activities; the whole family can have fun at these attractions.
The Undersea Observatory at Coral World Ocean Park is a fascinating window into undersea life in a coral reef. Meet an array of sea creatures, including sharks and sea lions. Special add-ons are kayaking with dolphins and swimming with sea lions. Younger kids can hold spiny sea urchins and pet stingrays in the touch tank, while older kids can swim and snorkel in the park.
Also in St. Thomas, The Pirate’s Treasure Museum explores the pirate history of the Caribbean and the process of recovering treasure from sunken ships. Interactive exhibits include a chance to try using Zeus, the electronic arm, to retrieve a coin from the seabed.
For thrills, go zip lining at Tree Limin’ Extreme in the rainforest of St. Peter Mountain on St. Thomas. The panorama across the treetops to the beaches, islands and intense blue waters of Magen’s Bay consistently ranks as one of the world’s top island and ocean views.
While you’ll find plenty of places to swim, sun, and enjoy SUP and other water sports, two favorite beaches are Megan’s Bay and Trunk Bay Beach. Beginning snorkelers can follow a marked underwater trail at Trunk Bay Beach. To explore other islands, take the frequent ferries between St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John.
