Sisters, Ore.

Any outdoorsy, adventuresome family already has Oregon on their bucket list, but Sisters boasts some of the greatest natural beauty the state has to offer. Check out Mt. Bachelor any time of year for a family getaway and take in the sweeping views. Head a bit outside of the city and explore Smith Rock State Park, also known as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. Julian, Calif.

Small-town America doesn’t get much smaller than Julian, Calif. Nestled in the mountains in the San Diego area, this historic town offers the perfect family hideaway for California locals getting away from the big city or traveling families looking for a quaint getaway amid a top tourist destination. Explore the rustic charm and old-fashioned allure of the traditional town — once playing a large role in the Gold Rush in the West. Hit local apple orchards and hiking trails with the kids, or stick with some history and tour Eagle Mining Co. and Pioneer Museum.

Snowmass, Colo.

Snow bunnies and adrenaline seekers alike enjoy the skiing, snowboarding and all things winter in Snowmass, Colo. This mountain town is perfect for outdoor adventurers, foodie families, shopaholics and everyone in between. Head for the slopes and trek through the snow before exploring the vibrant restaurant scene, bars and nightlife. Snowmass offers a little something for everyone with outdoor activities including fly fishing and whitewater rafting, while still offering seasonal festivals, concerts and events for kids and families of all ages.

Carrabassett Valley, Maine

Sugarloaf Mountain has attracted outdoorsy families and aspiring skiers for years and offers enough adventure activity for every age and season. Hike along the Appalachian Trail in the Bigelow Preserve and take in the fresh air and scenery, or check out the Anti-Gravity Complex complete with rock climbing and a skate park. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head into town for some food and small-town family fun.

Jackson County, N.C.

Head to Panthertown Valley in Jackson County, N.C., or, as it’s also known, the Yosemite of the East. Trek through more than 30 miles of trails, sightseeing and exploring the region’s many waterfalls. After getting some steps in and exploring the natural beauty of Jackson County, bring the family into town for food, grab a German brew with the older kids at Heinzelmännchen Brewery and check out local shops and goods.
