Travel Tips

By Kimberly Krol

While you might not be able to physically hit the links, golfers are still able to play Pebble Beach Golf Links virtually. Golfers can also stay sharp for when they can return to the course with some tips that can be done at home from Laird Small, director, Pebble Beach Golf Academy and Pebble Beach Resorts.

For rotational flexibility:

Face the doorway to your bathroom, then, with your shoulders back, extend your right arm out, place your right hand flat against the doorframe at shoulder height, hold your hand in place and turn your upper body to the left. The trail arm will stay behind you. If you are left-handed, extend your left arm and turn to the right. This exercise opens the chest and can add rotation to your swing.

Keep your head down:

Fold a hand towel three to five times, stand facing a wall in your hotel room and get into golf posture, at least one foot from the wall. Lean forward with your forehead against the wall, cushioned by the towel. Cross your arms over your chest with the fingertips of each hand touching the opposite shoulder, then makes turns back and forth, left shoulder down, right shoulder up. Continue 30 seconds to one minute. This exercise trains you to keep your body in position through a swing and to keep your head down from back swing to follow through.

Add width:

Stand in the middle of the doorframe, take your golf posture and reach for the top of the door jamb to assist in arm extension and position you for the top of your back swing.

Also according to Small, don’t forget to stretch, including your joint caps, shoulder blades, hips and lower back.
