About 80 percent of adults in the United States said they want to take some sort of road trip this summer, whether it be a quick one-to-one destination or a longer one with multiple stops. WalletHub released a report on 2022’s best and worst states for a summer road trip.
To help travelers plan a wallet-friendly, but fun road trip, WalletHub compared the 50 states on 32 key metrics, ranging from number of attractions to road conditions to costs.

- New York
- Minnesota
- Texas
- Louisiana
- Maine
Worst States for Summer Road Trips
- Rhode Island
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Montana
- Arkansas
Some key findings in the study noted California has the highest number of scenic byways (66), 22 times more than Connecticut or Delaware, the states with the least.
Mississippi has the lowest daily cost for camping at $35.53, 3.3 times lower than California, which has the highest at $117.37.
Oklahoma has the lowest price for a 3-star hotel room, six times lower than Oregon.
The study also found Vermont has the lowest number of car thefts, important to keep in mind when traveling by vehicle.
