Destinations / North America

If you’re traveling with smaller kids or kids not accustomed to hiking, at the Adirondacks you might worry your hiking options are limited. Adirondack hikes are notorious for being difficult, long and steep due to the age of many of the most popular trails. That said, you can still find kid-friendly Adirondack hikes offering both big views and greater accessibility.

1. Mount Van Hoevenberg

An exceptionally easy, well-maintained trail leads you to the top of Mount Van Hoevenberg. This is one of the Adirondacks’ few switchback trails, meaning you’ll gradually ascend to the top of the mountain versus trekking nearly straight up. Additionally, this trail is on New York Olympic Regional Development Authority property, with an Olympic complex right at the trailhead, with other activities and amenities (including food options and restrooms —  both good to have when hiking with kids).

2. Mount Jo

Another easy, short and minimal-elevation hike, the trail to Mount Jo heads out of the Adirondack Loj, where you’ll likewise find restrooms, food and information to get you started on your short trek. The way this mountain is situated means you’ll get great views of the surrounding, larger mountains, with little effort.

3. Big Crow

This hike is on the short side and only takes about an hour total to complete, at just more than a mile round-trip. While it does have some steep areas, the short length means it’s more doable for newer hikers, and the views from the top are well worth it.
