If 2023 is any indication of this year’s travel hot spots, Greece will be one of the top destinations for family travelers. While the country is synonymous with summer holidays, there is no reason to wait for the warm weather months to enjoy the many great family-friendly destinations the country has to offer.
Winter in Greece is an incredible time. The scent of wood burning in fireplaces, chestnuts roasting over hot coals and a crispness to the air definitive of the season are just some of the many sensory experiences that make Greece in the wintertime such a memorable place. All over Greece, locals and visitors alike head to beautiful spots that not only celebrate the season but also give you a glimpse into the real Greece.
Arahova, a village on the slopes of Mount Parnassus near the ancient site of Delphi, is a quintessential winter experience in Greece. The village has plenty of old-world charm and spectacular views of the mountains, especially impressive when the landscape is covered in snow in the winter months. You can spend your time exploring the village, hitting the nearby slopes for some skiing or enjoying a delicious meal in a local taverna. The area is famous for its meat dishes and a local cheese known as formaela, made from sheep milk and cooked on the grill.
Trikala, in the Thessaly region of Greece, is a city not often thought of by tourists, but perhaps itt should be. While it is considered a large city, it has a small-town vibe and has plenty of sites to see like Matsopoulou Mill, Trikala Fort and Stone Bridge Gate, all of which can give the family a glimpse into the city’s past. You can also take a daytrip to the nearby area known as Meteora, a place known for its massive rock formations that rise up like dramatic towers across the valley, each with a monastery perched impossibly at the top.
The city of Nafplio is a great wintertime destination for anyone staying in Athens, as it is a great daytrip from the city. Although the city sits on the shores of the Argolic Gulf, the water is peaceful and calm, even during winter. The city, which dates back centuries, is a national treasure for Greece and was once the country’s capital. Its great beaches are definitely worth visiting during the summer, but winter is perfect for visiting many great landmarks like Bourgi, a small fortress on a tiny island in the bay. You can also simply wander the cobblestone streets with Neoclassical buildings; explore great shops, many of which sell handmade toys for kids; or visit many tavernas where you can have a great meal or simply enjoy a hot cocoa by the fire.
