Just when it starts to feel like the dreariness of winter is going to drag on forever and the sun may never again make an appearance, the promise of spring waits just around the corner to renew and refresh. Now that the holidays are over it’s the perfect time to start planning your next getaway and Hawai’i, the Pearl of the Pacific, is the perfect choice.

I know what you’re thinking — there isn’t really a bad time of year to visit Hawai’i, right? While that is definitely true, springtime offers some of the best perks to make your vacation fun, relaxing and affordable.

The Weather is Perfect

While much can be said for the beautiful weather in Hawai’i, the islands are perfect for vacation fun during the spring months. As the rainy season winds down, the wet and windy weather gives way to the sunshine and pleasant temperatures that helped make the islands famous. Water temperatures usually rise into the 70s, making it the perfect time to hit the beach and catch some waves.

Festivals

Springtime on the islands isn’t just all about great weather — it’s the perfect time to get more familiar with the local culture through one of the many festivals of the season. The Big Island’s Merrie Monarch Festival in April is a hula celebration honoring the legacy of King David Kalakāua and the hula — the “language of the heart.” The week-long festival features hula exhibitions, contests and a parade through Hilo.

If you plan to be on any of the islands on May 1 be sure to participate in the local Lei Day festivities. This local celebration of May Day celebrates the colorful flowers of the islands with beautiful leis, lei-making demonstrations, local foods and hula performances on all of the islands.

Great Rates

Summer and winter are the busy seasons for the Hawai’ian Islands. Spring is technically the off-season, making prices more reasonable and affordable. Hawaiian Airlines offers great deals on fares throughout the spring months, with fares averaging as much as $300 cheaper than they run during the summer months. These savings add up when purchasing tickets for the entire family, providing you with plenty of leftover spending money to enjoy during your trip.

Smaller Crowds

In the summertime when kids have a break from school, throngs of tourists head for the sandy shores of Hawai’i. The same can be said for the winter months, when many folks look for a tropical escape from the harsh realities of winter. During springtime, while the islands are in the middle of the off-season, crowds are smaller, making popular beaches and attractions easier to maneuver.

Amazing Scenery

Spring brings with it a renewal of life — and Hawai’i is blessed with an abundance of love from Mother Nature herself. The temperate climate and volcanic ash-enriched soil combine to create verdant islands lush and bursting with color, but during springtime the flora is at its finest. Birds of paradise, orchids, plumeria and gingers are in full bloom, dotting the lush green landscapes with a full spectrum of color. One of the best places to view all of the bounties of nature is at the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Entrance is $20 for adults, $5 for children aged 6–16 and children under 6 are admitted for free. The gardens are open daily except for holidays.
