Planning a trip to Maui? Lucky you! But if you’re stumbling over details because you want everything to be perfect, we are here to help. Follow these tips to make sure your family travel to Maui is a success.
Practice Mālama
Respect is a big deal and, in Maui, where the Hawaiian word mālama means preserve, respect and honor, respecting the local land, community and culture is a big deal. This means paying attention to local laws and being respectful for the landscape (stay off unmarked trails and stick to roads). Try to leave the land (and water) the way you found it — pick up after yourself, don’t leave trash behind and use reef-safe sunscreen when going in the water. If you aren’t sure about something, ask. It’s always okay not to know something and make the effort to learn.
Plan Ahead and Make Reservations
Maui is an incredibly popular destination, especially during high season in the winter months. Things get busy and booked, so do your homework and make reservations for things like camping sites and dinners. Activities, like a sunrise tour at Haleakalā National Park, along with entrance anytime to Wai’ānapanapa State Park, always require reservations.
Rainy Day Plans
When you plan a trip to Maui, you’re probably expecting plenty of beach and outdoors time, but you’ll want to be aware of rainy season. If you visit during springtime, make sure you have some rainy day contingency plans in case your day at the beach gets rained out. Some great options include challenging yourselves to an escape room; taking a cooking class to learn some local dishes; or visiting Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium with plenty of indoor exhibits to explore.
Practice Safety Awareness
When we go on vacation, we tend to either be overly concerned with safety if we’ve heard negative things about a destination or we are oblivious to certain hazards because we aren’t aware of the local dangers. In Maui, just like any other destination in the world, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and the potential for something to go wrong. Don’t leave your valuables unattended on the beach, don’t hike or swim alone, stick to marked hiking trails, drive with respect for and awareness of other vehicles on the road, and pay attention to signs about beach safety and parking rules.
Buy Local
Visiting a destination is a great opportunity to support the local community by buying locally grown and made goods. This supports the people who can really benefit directly from your tourist dollars. In Maui, this is especially important as the island is still working to recover from the devastating fires of 2023.
