Fort King George, situated in Scarborough, was constructed in the late 18th century by the British. The fort today retains its original cannons, as well as the 35,000-gallon underground brick water cistern system. The largest mangrove forest and second-largest wetland across the two islands, Caroni Swamp is home to Caroni Bird Sanctuary, a designated Important Bird Area supporting a massive population of scarlet ibis and other water birds.
