Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes at New England Farms

Destinations / North America

Along with the dazzling fall foliage painting New England in the fall, October brings harvest season, when farms from Maine to Rhode Island welcome families to pick pumpkins, go for hayrides and get lost in corn mazes … and maybe stop at a pumpkin festival on the way. Here are some favorite farms to look for:

Maine
Appropriately, moose is the theme for the corn maze at Pumpkin Valley Farm in Dayton. The 5-acre maze will keep your family busy for at least an hour, and farm animals, corn pit, wagon rides and a tractor-pulled “Cow Train” will entertain kids. Pick your own pumpkins to take home.

New Hampshire
In Center Conway and just over the state line from Maine, Sherman Farm is among New England’s oldest corn mazes, and one of the most engaging. Riddles and games fill the maze, which has three different skill levels for kids of different ages. Little kids can play in the corn box and the farm-themed play area and everyone can join in a hay ride.

In New Hampshire’s southwest corner, close to Vermont and Massachusetts, Patterson Farm in Hinsdale constructs an entire village of fantastical pumpkin structures, some large enough to walk into. Cottages with cornstalk roofs, pumpkin trees and other creations are built of multicolored pumpkins. You can take home pumpkins and decorative gourds from the farmstand.

Vermont
You could easily spend two or three hours in the 24-acre Great Vermont Maze in Danville. More than 100 feet of bridges and an underground tunnel make this one of the most unusual to visit. Kids love the Nigerian Dwarf goats, and playing Farmyard Golf and in the play area.

Massachusetts
Chatham’s Pumpkin People in the Park
begins in mid-October, when dozens of pumpkin figures fill Kate Gould Park and the bandstand on Main Street. Created by local businesses, schools, organizations and individuals, pumpkin-headed figures wear costumes ranging from sedate Puritans to wildly outrageous. Two farms in nearby Falmouth, Coonamessett Farm and Tony Andrews Farm, offer hayrides and pumpkin picking throughout October.

Rhode Island
Cucumber Hill Farm in Foster adds a nighttime Flashlight Maze experience to its corn maze, this year themed Nocturnal Neighbors. A less intimidating kiddie maze is constructed of hay bales. A unique feature here is Ponies One-on-One, when children older than 5 years old can spend 15 minutes meeting ponies, during which time they can brush them, learn to put on a bridle and lead a pony.

Move to the Music and Rhythm of Destinations Around the World

The true rhythm of a country is felt away from the main tourist traps. Galleries, museums and historic sites provide an overview, but you need to go elsewhere to experience the living, beating heart of a place. For instance, immerse yourself in the humid turmoil of a Durban underground club, or get to grips with the formal group dances of the Scottish Highlands, or become part of the foot-stomping camaraderie of a Galway pub, or ride the waves of neon-lit energy in a Seoul basement nightclub.
