Trendy Family Fun in Amerikamura

Amerikamura, or America-mura, is a shopping, entertainment and foodie neighborhood in Osaka, Japan. What may be a dead giveaway by the name, Amerikamura is also known as American Village and offers tourists, families and locals a fun blend of Western-inspired shops, Japanese food stalls and a blend of oddities and attractions. It’s one of those easy-to-navigate neighborhoods that has enough around every corner, including themed stores like Alice on Wednesdays and tons of dining options, that entertain all ages and interests.

Technically within the Chūō-ku district of Osaka, Amerikamura stretches from Nagahori Street to Dotombori. The vibrant neon advertisements, huge character-clad signs and quirky designs across many of the area’s buildings make this region a difficult one to miss.

This region came about in the 1970–80s, attracting much of Osaka’s youth culture. During that time, American manufacturers and goods were beginning to develop in the area, creating a niche market for West-meets-East culture and retail. The mix of cultures makes for an easy transition for tourists, specifically families, in easing into a new locale with the kids.

Now, guests and locals walk along the pedestrian-friendly streets, discovering (seemingly endless) used-clothing stores, gift shops, authentic Japanese salons and quirky boutiques. This avenue has some serious style and you can walk for blocks, finding something new to pop in and explore.

Stop in any one of the authentic Japanese bakeries and local cafés, tasting traditional regional apple cakes, or keep it quirky at the Shiba Inu Café along Dotonbori Canal. The kids can play with puppies and sip tea before heading out into the surrounding marketplace. Walk through the covered market section, tasting sizzling street food at any Japanese food stall, with some lines filing down the street.

The city offers fun shops any time of the week, including high-end stores rivaling Fifth Avenue in New York, but you can also plan your stay in Amerikamura over a weekend, as the city boasts fun attractions, including flea markets and live entertainment.

This region is easily accessible from Shisaibashi Station, cab or walkable from nearby hotels.

One way to explore a new city is to stroll down memory lane, so explore the region’s vintage shops. Oddly enough, in Osaka, vintage shopping is far more fruitful for Western clothing culture than authentic Japanese.

Whatever you decide to do, you can easily entertain the kids, fill up on great food, shop, sightsee and, if you have any energy left, enjoy the exciting nightlife.
