Travel Tips

When we learned Loews Hotels enhanced its familiar Loews Loves Kids program this summer to the more inclusive Loews Loves Families, we decided it was a good time to plan a weekend at Loews Hotel Boston. We found a chic, smart city hotel that would have been as good a nest for a couple’s weekend as it was for a family adventure.

Right from the start, kids get special attention, with a Loews traveler pin at check-in for kids ages 4–10 and choices of welcome amenities. But it’s not just young children that get special attention: The program celebrates parents and kids of all ages — from newborns and toddlers to teens. A complete amenities list for the appropriate age group is presented at check-in, so parents of babies and toddlers can request complimentary nightlights, cribs, bottle warmers, outlet covers or baby bath amenity kits.

Older children are offered activity guides to explore Boston, and entertainment choices that include board games, video game consoles and coloring books with crayons, depending on ages. Kids get special menus in the restaurants and dining activities to make their meals more memorable. Parents get a happy surprise, too: Children under age 18 stay free.

Older kids will love the building itself: Loews Hotel Boston occupies the former Boston Police Headquarters building, an impressive granite structure converted into a hotel without losing its historic features. Blue lights flank the front door, and the city’s shield is carved in the granite façade. Inside, the marble lobby gleams anew to create a welcoming reception area, and throughout the building are photos, medals and memorabilia from the years when it housed the city’s police officials.

Our ninth-floor room was spacious and decorated in restful oyster shades; one wall was windows overlooking Back Bay rooftops. We all liked the little details: cushy fleece-lined sateen robes, plenty of outlets and ports at the desk, reading lights with well-directed beams, a motion sensor-activated nightlight in the bathroom, light-blocking drapes, a commodious tub in addition to the large shower.

The kid’s amenity basket on the desk included a copy of Make Way for the Ducklings, and since the hotel is only a block from the Public Garden we were inspired to find the bronze duckling sculptures there, as well as ride the Swan Boats (no summer trip to Boston is complete without that tradition!). Another kid-friendly places nearby is Maparium — a giant glass earth globe that you can walk inside.

More features are added to Loews Loves Families throughout the year, and to celebrate the new program the group is offering the Family Road Trip package. Until Sept. 30, guests can book a stay through the package, and receive a second guestroom at 50 percent off, complimentary breakfast for up to two children, a $30 food and beverage credit and complimentary parking for the entire stay. The offer is available at Loews Philadelphia, Loews Regency New York and Loews Boston hotels.
