Destinations / Europe

Headed to Barcelona for the first time? Whether bringing the family along or venturing on a romantic getaway, here are a few must stops for any first timer’s trip to the stunning Spanish city. Pack your comfortable walking shoes, get your camera ready and stay hungry — this Spanish city has a lot of must-see locales to check out with ample opportunity to taste your way through the city, too.

Gothic Quarter

First things first, the Gothic Quarter will grab any traveler’s attention and is a great place to begin. Easily one of the oldest and most unique sections of Barcelona, the Gothic Quarter is a historic corner of the city worth exploring. Snap pictures of centuries-old architecture and tight allies dating back 2,000 years. Stop off at King’s Square for a rest and some tapas before exploring the Gothic Cathedral and wander the cobbled ancient streets with the kids.

La Sagrada Familia

Paying a visit to La Sagrada Familia on your first visit to the city goes without saying, and for good reason. Not only is the towering feat of architectural integrity and incredible beauty a sight to see, it’s also an important piece of traditional and modern Spanish history. While still unfinished and with years to go, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one for the books and a must for family photos — it’s in the name.

La Gracia Neighborhood

You’ll know this trendy neighborhood at first glance, with the quirky, colorful buildings and winding, mosaic-covered walls — Park Guell is a millennial gold mine and will have your kids snapping pictures for social media instantaneously. Travelers flock to this park for its Instagram-worthy appeal, but stay for Verdi Street’s fun shops and restaurants.

Parc de la Ciutadella

For green-seeking travelers, go no further than Parc de la Ciutadella. The only natural environment in the whole city, this stop is a great break in your wall-to-wall historic architecture and cobblestone street excursions. Stroll around the stunning waterfall of Cascada Monumental in this 18th-century park, previously a prison, and enjoy some quiet time with the family.

With the Mediterranean Sea to one side, a small portion of Serra de Collserola Natural Park to the other and a labyrinth of city streets and attractions within, Barcelona is a culture-seeking traveler’s dream. Hit the quintessential Spanish city sites first, or pepper them in throughout the trip. Either way, the city offers enough to entertain everyone, novice travelers included.
