Visit El Yunque National Forest, the Only U.S. Rainforest

Are you a national park passholder? Visit the only U.S. rainforest in the national forest system, El Yunque. Located roughly 30 minutes from Old San Juan in Puerto Rico, the expansive forest welcomes visitors into a lush park with much to see.

Upon entry, the cascading Coco Falls greets visitors. There is an opportunity to pull off on the side to take pictures, but the road system was built for tourists to take a final look on their way out. Paved roads lead visitors to several stopping points to learn about historic sites, like Yokahu Tower, viewing areas, waterfalls and even a café for those who need a break before returning to exploring.

The forest is home to native species like coqui frogs that can be heard croaking; 240 types of trees; 25 waterfalls; ancient petroglyphs; and a plethora of unique birds and insects. Warning signs line stopping areas to keep travelers alert of wild mongoose.

In addition to seeing the forest by foot, visitors have the chance to get a bird’s eye view by zip-line or horseback on secluded trails. Before visiting, guests must purchase a timed entry ticket. Weekends are known to be sold out, so planning a visit during the week will provide an intimate experience.
