Family travelers and fans of nature and the great outdoors must try Skunk Train’s newest offering, Hike to the Glen. Following the railroad tracks, hikers walk through Pudding Creek into the untouched redwood groves, previously only accessible via the Skunk Train or its railbikes.

“The Hike to the Glen offering allows lifelong enthusiasts of the Skunk Train to experience the tracks in a completely different manner,” stated Efstathios (Stathi) Pappas, general manager, Skunk Train. “And for new visitors, this is yet another adventure that we’re excited to be able to offer our guests, in addition to the train itself, or one of our three unique Railbike rides.”

Now, the new hike allows hikers to stop and take in their surroundings. The Pacific Coast temperate rainforest ecosystem serves as home to osprey, deer, river otters, herons and more, and these animals come into view during this immersive hike. Along the way, knowledgeable guides highlight points of interest to share details about the historical and natural touchstones of the route.

The hike begins from Skunk Train’s Fort Bragg Depot at 10 a.m. before continuing on a 3.5-mile route along and over the rail line. The hike occurs on a well-graded footpath with the occasional sturdy bridge and gentle slopes, making it suitable for adults, children and even dogs!

Ending at The Glen, hikers enjoy a picnic lunch packed in an embroidered Skunk Train backpack. After the picnic, hikers can decide to return to the starting point on foot or take the Pudding Creek Express train back. If hikers choose to return by train, they can expect to arrive back to the starting point by 12:45 p.m. If on foot, hikers can expect to return around 1:30 p.m.

The Hike to the Glen experience, available every Saturday morning, requires a ticket. Tickets are $100 per person ages 13 and up and $20 per furry four-legged friend. Closed-toe shoes are required, casual/sports attire is suggested and hikers are expected to check in 15 minutes before departure.
