Lively Atlanta is a winner as a family travel destination, with several top kid-pleaser attractions. From Jim Henson’sSesame Street puppets to a giant panda in the zoo and a whole world of LEGOS, families will find plenty to love about the Big A.
Begin at Centennial Olympic Park to watch the dancing fountain with its colored lights and musical accompaniment. In the summer, the park becomes a splash pad for kids. A ride on the SkyView Ferris wheel is a good way to appreciate the size of Georgia’s largest city.
The park lies close to Georgia Aquarium, one of the world’s largest. The aquarium is filled with interactive exhibits and activities for kids, and also houses some amazing aquatic creatures. Walk through the aquatic tunnel, with fish — even sharks — swimming right beside you and over your head.
Also in the center of the city, LEGOLAND Discovery Center inspires kids of all ages to create their own masterpieces of LEGO art. It took 1.5 million blocks to build the model of the city displayed here, where visitors can spot local landmarks. Kids will love the LEGO-themed rides and how-to workshops for various ages.
Not just a panda, but four pandas are the highlight of Zoo Atlanta for many visitors. That said, there’s a lot more to see and do there. Visit monkeys and gorillas in an African rain forest and see elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, warthogs and a white rhino in the African savannah.
For Sesame Street fans, the Center for Puppetry Arts may be the highlight of a trip to Atlanta. Here, you’ll find the original puppets, as well as other Jim Henson creations for Labyrinth and The Muppet Show. Puppets from all periods and cultures fill the Global Collection Gallery. There are also lots of hands-on opportunities and shows for all ages.
