While the United States offers a plethora of bike-friendly destinations, a recent study by personal injury law firm Bader Scott found some counties across the country are far more dangerous than others. Family travelers might be surprised to find many lie in popular vacation states.
The study looked at data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, focusing on the top 200 most-populous counties in America and the number of road crashes between 2017 and 2021.
Of the top 20 most dangerous counties for cyclists, 14 are in Florida. Pasco County, Sarasota County and Manatee County take the top three spots as the most dangerous for cyclists. Other Florida counties include Pinellas, Volusia, Marion, Hillsborough, Duval, Lee, Brevard, Osceola, Broward, Polk and Collier.
Two California counties also made the top 20 of most dangerous counties for cyclists: San Joaquin and Stanislaus. Other counties with high fatality rates among cyclists include East Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Orleans, Louisiana; Charleston, South Carolina; and Brazoria, Texas.
