Portland, Oregon, invites family travelers to explore its many gardens this summer.
Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
The 9.5-acre garden’s stunning azaleas and rhododendrons are in full bloom April–June, making it a perfect stop during a summer trip.
Considered Portland’s museum of living trees, the arboretum is home to 2,300 species of trees and shrubs from six continents. The grounds are free and open to the public, 365 days a year.
This garden was constructed by Chinese artisans from Suzhou, China. The botanical garden showcases Chinese culture through hundreds of annual cultural and botanical programs.
This garden celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The popular, 17-acre garden draws visitors for its horticultural events, workshops and tours.
Founded in 1963, this public garden is considered one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan. The non-profit organization hosts a cultural festival, art exhibits and presentations highlighting Japanese culture.
Portland’s International Rose Test Garden
One of the top free attractions in all of Oregon, this iconic garden in Washington Park draws international visitors to explore its 10,000 individual rose bushes. The best blooms are on display May–October.
This Catholic garden spans 54 acres of garden and forest in northeast Portland. The lower level is free and there is a nominal admission fee to access the upper gardens.
