It isn’t your typical city for a family summer vacation, but Oklahoma City very well might surprise you if you add it to your travels this season. Although far from any coastline, Oklahoma City is home to the Oklahoma River and there are countless activities to stay cool.

Raft the River
RIVERSPORT Adventures, along the river within the Boathouse District, allow visitors to raft rapids ranging from Class II to IV, as well as kayak, surf and zip line. The venue is so well-maintained, it’s set to host canoe slalom events for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Visit First Americans Museum
First opened in 2021, this museum celebrates Oklahoma’s Indigenous inhabitants and educates visitors about the 39 federally recognized tribes in the state. Kids will gain a new perspective on the tribes’ creation stories, their forced removal by Europeans and the United States, and current issues and traditions.
Head to Scissortail Park
This massive park has its own lake where you can go on a paddle boat. The park also offers a concert stage with a great lawn, promenade with Skydance Bridge, children’s splash park and playground, and more. The park often hosts a farmers’ market, festivals and film showings.
