Travel Tips

New Year’s Eve seems to be one of those holidays we know is coming — it’s literally the same time every year — but tend to ignore until it’s right around the corner. Blame the all-encompassing Christmas holiday and the busyness of the season, but, regardless, New Year’s Eve plans can sometimes fall by the wayside.

Get a jump on this year, even if it’s only a couple weeks in advance, and plan a celebratory vacation. Whether you love the holiday or it’s just another day, it’s a great time to take advantage of the low-traffic airports and less-traveled destinations. Bring the kids or get away just the two of you, but be sure to consider a few things before planning.

Plan to be Flexible

The more flexible you can be about your trip, including the destination and accommodations, the better. Cities will be pretty packed with tourists and parties in hotels and bars, so unless you enjoy the crowds and last-minute hiked rates, steer clear. Consider some rural options, like a scenic location with mild temperatures for nature-filled hikes and peace and quiet, or some off-beat destinations you’ve been meaning to visit, but haven’t had the chance.

Plan for Weather

While narrowing down your destination options, consider the weather. While it’s merely a suggestion and not a guarantee, it will be helpful to know what you’re getting in for in a new destination this time of year. If you plan to drive, camp or spend time outside, make sure you’re prepared for the chance of snow.

Plan for a Quick Trip

New Year’s Eve and Day is all of a few hours long, so don’t go crazy packing and cramming in activities. If you do want to make a trip out of it, consider the possibility tours and activities may be closed for the holiday, so plan accordingly. If you’re bringing the family, check out local activities and attractions. Whether a simple sledding hill and holiday markets remaining from the Christmas season, it’s a great way to entertain the kids while feeling like a local in a new locale.

Consider the Perks

Scout deals online for home shares like Airbnb, VRBO and Flipkey, or check out available hotels and bundles with Hotels.com, Priceline, Expedia, Kayak and the slew of others. There may be new promotions and rates for those traveling over the holiday.

Kick off the New Year in a new way — with a family trip under your belt, enjoying quality time, new experiences and making memories to last longer than the year ahead.
