Sure you can take a daytrip to Disneyland Paris, just 20 miles east of the city, but why fly all that way to see Mickey and friends when there’s so much to do and see in Paris proper?
From quintessential sites like the Eiffel Tower to unbelievable parks and riverboat cruises, Paris has something for all members of the family. Here are four ways to keep the crew entertained in the City of Lights.
Paris’ most recognizable landmark, the Eiffel Tower, is a must. You can explore the gardens underneath the massive iron structure for free or pay to ascend to the first floor, second floor and summit. If the kids have energy to burn, a discounted ticket allows you to take the stairs to the first and second floors, then an elevator to the top.

In addition to marveling at the amazing views on all levels, kids can walk on the glass viewing platform on the first floor and sample macrons on the second floor. A self-guided children’s tour follows the adventures of Gus, a characterization of designer Gustave Eiffel, throughout the structure.
With 35,000 pieces of art and about 10 million visitors per year, the Louvre can be overwhelming for visitors of any age. To avoid the stress, make a plan before you go, so you know what you want to see and how to find it. Not sure where to start? Print out a thematic Visitor Trail map from the museum’s website.

Or, time your visit to take the free, guided family tour, My First Louvre, held every Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. You can also download the Louvre App for 600 artwork descriptions, or rent a Nintendo 3DS loaded with descriptions, high-definition images and more from guest services.
Another option is to arrange a scavenger hunt of the museum through ThatRue for an additional charge. Best for teens and tweens, you can add an option geared to kids 5 to 13.
Notre-Dame Cathedral
Disney fans won’t want to miss Notre-Dame Cathedral, the setting for Victor Hugo’s novel-turned-animated-movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Snap a family photo outside, then tour inside for free. If younger kids get bored with the Gothic architecture, take them to the small park next to the church for some downtime.

One of the highlights of a visit to the cathedral is climbing up into the tower. Schedule your visit by downloading the JeFile app, enter the time you’d like to visit that day and come back at your scheduled time. After 422 steps, you’ll see Emmanuel, the 13-ton bell rung on special occasions, the famous gargoyles and an impressive view of the Seine River, Eiffel Tower and other landmarks.
Jardin du Luxembourg
Paris has some of the world’s best parks for families, and few rival the Jardin du Luxembourg. Not only does it have a massive playground, but it boasts a carousel, puppet shows, pony rides and sailboats. There are also gardens, greenhouses and 106 statues.
Can’t make it to the Jardin du Luxembourg? The Jardin des Tuileries near the Louvre features ponds with sailboats kids can steer with a stick, trampolines, a carousel and space to spread a blanket for a picnic lunch.
