Destinations / North America

Southwest Kansas flies under the radar in a state known for its natural beauty, outdoor adventure and family-friendly fun. With prairies that meet the sky, endless fields of beautiful sunflowers, and sunsets that make you stop and take notice, it is always a great road trip destination. Whether you are simply passing through or looking to feel at home for a few days, the small towns throughout the region are hidden gems with plenty to offer. One town in particular makes family travel a breeze by offering a range of activities for everyone at great prices.

Garden City is home to a wide variety of fun, family-friendly attractions. And the best part is they are all either free or low-priced, so it is possible to plan a trip where you can afford to see and do everything with the whole family. The city is home to an incredible zoo, Lee Richardson Zoo, free to visit every day — you only have to pay if you want to drive through the zoo in your car or want to participate in one of the animal encounters (even the drive-through is free on certain Wednesdays throughout the year). Attached to the zoo is Finney County Historical Society Museum, also home to a True Crime Exhibit and also free to visit (although donations are accepted).

Located next to the zoo is one of the city’s two water parks, Parrot Cove Water Park. The indoor waterpark features slides and pools for every age, along with games and a Snack Shack, so the family can spend a whole day enjoying fun for $15 per person or less, depending on age (seniors and kids 8–18 are $12, kids 4–7 are $10, and kids 3 and under get in for free). You can also get a family pass for $125, which covers admission for a family of four for a whole month if you plan to stay in town for a while.

Garden City is also home to a second water park, Garden Rapids at the Big Pool. Located at the site of what was once the largest hand-dug pool in America (big enough for boats to pull water skiers and every once in a while, the elephants from the local zoo would stop by for a swim), this outdoor waterpark features water slides and a splash pad, and is only $3 per person to visit.

When you aren’t playing in the water or hanging out with the animals at the zoo, Garden City is known for its shopping and dining scene. The prices are always affordable, as are the prices at local hotels, so you’ll be able to pack in plenty of excitement during your stay and still stay within your vacation budget.
