Travel Tips

Planning the perfect vacation can be tricky — especially when you’ve got multiple generations to accommodate. Luckily, multigenerational travel is becoming increasingly popular, with a multitude of destination experiences providing family-friendly fun. Read on to make sure you take everyone’s needs into consideration when planning your next trip together.

Start by sitting down as a family with every member joining the trip. An open discussion of what each person is looking for in a vacation is a surefire way to guarantee everyone feels included in the decision and will get the maximum enjoyment out of the experience. Identify the specific needs of each generation and come up with a list of destinations the group can agree on. Once you’ve got your working list, get to work researching each destination to find one that meets all of your family’s needs.

If your family is traveling with infants and toddlers, look for a destination with lots of activities designed just for them. Programs and activities that cater to their growing minds and developing motor skills are not only great ways to keep them entertained, but also give parents fun ways to spend quality time with their little ones in fun locations. Nanny and babysitting services are also important amenities to look for so mom and dad can squeeze in some romantic time during the trip.

If you’ve got teens traveling with you, make sure your destination choices offer activities that capture their attention long enough to keep them having fun, rather than reverting to social media. Another important factor with teens: making sure there is a likelihood they will have other kids their age around. Cruises, always a fun family vacation option, have plenty of teen-friendly activities and programs designed specifically for them that encourage interaction with other passengers in their specific age group.

Adult children will be looking for fun and adventure with a mature theme. Destinations offering options like wine tasting or outdoor adventure activities will help make sure they have plenty to do, while little ones and parents are busy with activities of their own.

Senior family members are valuable additions to the family vacation experience, but they may not be interested in high-velocity activities like zip lining or white-water rafting. Look for destinations with plenty of exciting activities to spark their interest, like art workshops, allowing them to explore their creative side while enjoying a beautiful destination.

One of the most important things to look for in a multigenerational destination is one offering activities everyone can enjoy together. One great option is a dude ranch vacation — these resorts, often all-inclusive, offer great family-friendly activities like outdoor barbecues or evening campfire events that include food and entertainment.

Whatever destination your family is looking for this year, whether it be a coastal paradise or a wilderness retreat, a luxury cruise or a safari adventure, finding one that caters to every member of the family’s needs and tastes (while also offering universal activities that everyone can enjoy) will guarantee your family has fun making memories to last a lifetime.
