Drone Fishing at Oceanfront Resort in Mexico

Velas Resorts

Age Specific / Kids

Ever catch any of those sweeping aerial videos on the splash page of exotic oceanfront resorts? You just can’t get those with a regular camera, but it turns out drones can do much more than capture breathtaking views.

At Grand Velas Los Cabos, a AAA Five Diamond Resort on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, the latest resort activity appeals to anglers from the most novice to most serious: drone fishing.

But if you are afraid that yours or your kids’ piloting skills might not be up to snuff and your drone might end up deep in the Pacific Ocean in Davy Jones’ Locker, have no fear: The resort makes it effortless. Participants on the beach are guided by an instructor, at the ready to help them bait their line and send it off with a DJI Phantom Drone. Once it flies far from the shoreline, the line is cast where snook, snapper, shark, roosterfish and other hungry fish are eager and waiting.

Grand Velas Los Cabos is the first resort in Cabo to offer this activity, and it’s decidedly more luxe than what you might remember during fishing expeditions with your grandpa as a kid. Along with the chance to navigate the drone and reel in a big one, you and a companion will experience a gourmet breakfast picnic with chairs and a beach umbrella. Available each morning 6–8 a.m., before the waters are overtaken with swimmers and sunbathers, Drone Fishing costs $650 for two people, including tax.

The resort has 307 oceanview suites more than 1,180 square feet; all feature private terraces and some also have personal plunge pools. Duplex wellness suites have fitness amenities and in-suite juice bars. On site you’ll find five restaurants, a 35,000-square-foot Se Spa with 16 treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy facility, three pools and a Technogym Fitness Center. There is also a recreational activities program, separate teens’ and kids’ clubs, a 24-hour butler concierge service and 24-hour in-suite service. And the property is located just 35 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport.
