In early August, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the FAA is investing $870 million to improve infrastructure, enhance safety and add more family-friendly features for American families. Through this initiative, the department is giving 339 grants across 44 states and two territories.
Family-focused improvements span Boston’s General Edward Lawrence Logan International, featuring four renovated Kidports areas with new play structures and themes for children; Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where 37 restrooms will be modernized across five terminals to include family-friendly features; and Mississippi’s Tupelo Regional Airport, expanding the terminal to include a family-friendly security screening lane.
Additional upgrades and enhancements include a reconstructed terminal roof at Miami International Airport, terminal expansion at Charleston International Airport, rehabilitated passenger bridges and reconstructed key airport facilities at Akron-Canton Airport, runway reconstruction at Sugar Land Regional Airport, and a new terminal access road at Los Angeles International Road.
The department also revealed San Diego International Airport will receive funds for noise mitigation, while Lynchburg Regional Airport in Virginia will get a new terminal.
“Upgrading our airport infrastructure is part of our work to usher in the Golden Age of Transportation,” said Sean P. Duffy, U.S. Transportation Secretary. “American families deserve state-of-the-art runways, taxiways and infrastructure that will make their travel experience safer, smoother, and more efficient.”
