Fall and winter highlight the colors and beauty of Western Massachusetts, and family travelers can venture to Berkshire, Hampshire, Hampden and/or Franklin to enjoy outdoor adventures, family-friendly attractions and even a luxury retreat or two. Shoulder season is the best time to visit the destination, when leaf peeping and ski sites await.
Hiking and Parks
In Hampshire County, Mount Holyoke Range State Park features miles of hiking trails with great fall foliage, while Highland Pond in Franklin County provides hikes and facilities alongside bird-watching opportunities. And to see one of the nation’s largest urban parks, don’t miss Forest Park in Greater Springfield, where families can even see a light show beginning at the end of November.
Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow Tubing
Both beginner and seasoned snow professionals love Western Massachusetts; the area’s combination of diverse terrain, accessibility and lively après-ski scene draws people from far and wide. Places like Berkshire East Mountain Resort offer thrilling skiing and snowboarding experiences, while Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort is a more family-friendly spot. For quieter adventures, Notchview offers snowshoers a peaceful experience with more than 3,000 acres of wilderness.
Country’s Longest Zipline
Take on the Catamount Zip Tour, a two-hour outdoor experience with three dual-zipline spans and a chairlift up the mountain. The unique braking system lets you control your speed, topping off at 55 mph. The final part of the tour is called the “Cata-monster,” spanning more than one mile.
Accommodations
Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Berkshire County welcomes families and lets travelers enjoy the mountains in all their glory. Also in Berkshire is Berkshire’s Life House, a property inspired by a classic American roadside motor lodge on the banks of the Hoosic River in North Adams. Or, opt for Tourists, a 46-room hotel combining nature and design. Tourists also features an arts and culture calendar with live music, culinary classes, outdoor activities and more.
