Plan a unique trip for your family once the weather warms up or just take advantage of a destination with warm weather all winter long and rent a farm for a weekend. If you’ve ever daydreamed about idyllic days surrounded by open pasture, picking your own food and caring for a sheep or chicken or two, then this type of getaway could be just the thing. You get all the benefits of farm life, without any of the negatives, like waking up in the wee morning hours to milk the cows or shoveling the manure in the stables. Some of the farms available for family vacays are even pretty luxurious.

Here are four farms your family can rent for your next vacay via Vrbo.

Willet Ponds Farm

In the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Willet Ponds Farm offers two different houses for rent on the property. During a stay in the authentic, 2,000-square-foot farmhouse that sleeps eight across four bedrooms, all decked out in antique furniture, you’re invited to meet the resident animals, from horses to dogs, chickens to a pot-bellied pig. Take advantage of the hiking trails, fishing and swimming available on property.

Little Peak Creek Farm

On Little Peak Creek Farm’s 72 acres, you can choose to stay in either a farm cabin that sleeps five, a smokehouse studio that sleeps two or even a treehouse. Explore the open pastures, forest trails and views of the Virginia mountains. You’re welcome to gather some veggies or eggs for a meal. Bicycles are available if you’d like to see the lay of the land with a bit of speed. Kids will love visiting the wide array of animals living on the farm, including goats, chickens, ducks and horses.

Misty Meadows Farmstead

The entire extended family can get away to Misty Meadows Farmstead for a week, with 80 acres that are all yours and a big, rambling farmhouse that sleeps nine. Feed the animals, check out the flower beds, take a turn on the tree swing and enjoy being removed enough from the hubbub of daily life that you only have to check in on if you really want to (the property owners assure you can still get cell service in this remote locale).

Los Olivos Farmhouse

And if your idea of a farm getaway includes lots of nature and luxury, and few barnyard smells, get away to Los Olivos Farmhouse in California, where the only animals you’ll see are the cows on the neighboring cattle ranches. Otherwise, you can enjoy privacy in this three-bedroom farmhouse with its indoor and outdoor fireplaces, lap pool and hot tub.

The astonishing tides of the Bay of Fundy offer plenty of experiences for family travelers in Maritime Canada. The newest of these is the chance to eat dinner on the floor of the ocean, seated beneath towering cliffs and tide-carved sea stacks. Return the next day to see your former “dining room” under 40 feet of ocean.

Introduce the Family to Saudi Culture at the AlUla Camel Cup

Visiting Saudi Arabia means introducing the family to a country rich in culture and history, giving the kids experiences they won’t get anywhere else in the world. I spent several years living as an expat in this desert kingdom, and the experiences I had were not only completely unique but also helped shape my perspective on the world today.
