With more family travelers opting for vacation rentals like Airbnb and VRBO, ensuring rentals are secure and private is essential. Unfortunately, some dangers are more subtle than others and often overlooked.
Add this safety checklist to your to-do on your next vacation rental:
Rekeyed Locks
If locks look mismatched or new, ask the owner of the property why this might be; sometimes, it’s a sign the locks have been replaced after an unauthorized entry or break-in.
WiFi Devices Scan
Use your phone to scan for unknown devices linked to the rental’s WiFi. Often, hidden cameras run off the host network. Surveillance devices can be as small as a USB plug or smoke alarm.
Tampered Alarms
Look for alarm panels that have exposed wires or panels switched off.
Peepholes and Mirrors
Use the “fingernail test” to test mirrors. Put your fingernail to a mirror, and if the mirror is real, your nail should touch the reflection; a false mirror creates a gap, indicating a two-way glass. Peepholes can also be reversed.
Balcony and/or Secondary Entrances
Check if the rental’s balcony or windows can be accessed from a neighbor’s unit or fire escape.
Unusual Wall Sockets or Vents
Wall sockets and vents are common spots to hide recorders. Shine a flashlight to look for small lenses or wiring. Female travelers are most at risk for voyeurism setups.
Host Behavior
It’s important to note the host’s behavior. If the host is overly controlling, insists on meeting in person or even comes to the rental without notice, these could be behaviors to make note of.
