Holland America Line and Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center teamed up to offer family travelers a chance to name a rescue moose. Suggestions were accepted on a designated post on the cruise line’s Facebook and Instagram pages through June 23. Holland America Line gives cruise-goers the chance to view Alaska’s wildlife responsibly from its ships and on shore excursions. AWCC rescues injured and orphaned animals, offering them spacious enclosures and quality care.

“Holland America Line has been exploring Alaska longer than any other cruise line and we are deeply committed to supporting AWCC in its conservation efforts to protect Alaska’s wildlife,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer, Holland America Line. “Our guests take an Alaska cruise to see wildlife in the region, and moose are part of ‘Alaska’s Big Five.’ We are excited to give our fans the opportunity to participate with the Alaska community in a fun and meaningful way.”
Fans were encouraged to comment on the social media posts with a name for the rescue. The top 10, now available, were selected by HAL and AWCC team members and include Denali, Eland (Dutch for moose), Juneau, Mac, Maggie, Sitka, Tuktuvak (Inuit word for moose), Tulip, Journey and Aurora. Fans can vote for their favorites on Holland America Line’s Facebook and Instagram pages, with the winner announced soon.

“We are grateful to partners like Holland America Line that help AWCC continue the work we do to protect and preserve Alaska’s wildlife,” said Sarah “Howie” Howard, executive director, Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. “Most orphan animals that come into our facility are given a name to help foster a bond not only with our staff, but with our visitors as well. We can’t wait to see what name is chosen by Holland America Line’s fans.”
Holland America Line is the only cruise line to offer moose encounters at the AWCC facility this summer, allowing participants to feed moose and learn more about them. HAL also hosts a wildlife expert on board.
