Family travelers looking to book the ultimate summer vacation should consider a trip to Montage Kapalua Bay in Maui. Set on the beautiful coast of West Maui, this resort blends Hawaiian culture into family-friendly programming.
To help families plan a sustainable and respectful vacation to the island, Dustin Barton, activities manager, Montage Kapalua Bay, shared tips on creating a connection and protecting Maui’s unique environment.

“Maui’s natural beauty is a big part of what makes a trip here so special, and we love helping families find simple ways to take care of it while they visit. While enjoying time at local bays and beaches like Kapalua and Napili, choosing reef-safe sunscreen, keeping a respectful distance from marine life, and not standing on coral when snorkeling are all small actions that make a big difference. It’s a great way for families to enjoy the ocean while helping to protect it for future generations,” said Barton.
Barton added, “One of the best parts of a trip to Maui is getting to experience Hawaiian culture in a real and meaningful way. At Montage Kapalua Bay, families can take part in our diverse art and culture programming, featuring activities like hula classes, lei making, ukulele lessons and more. These hands-on experiences make for special moments that go beyond a typical vacation and help guests leave with a deeper connection to the island.”
Montage Kapalua Bay is a resident-style resort designed with families in mind. The resort offers stays with separate living and dining areas, kitchens and laundry facilities. For children aged 5–12, the resort’s Paintbox combines arts, crafts and outdoor activities inspired by Maui’s landscapes. Guests of all ages can learn to dance the hula.
Play the ‘ukulele or learn how to string a lei kui from the resort’s Cultural Ambassadors. Little travelers can participate in Montage Merits and earn badges to help deepen their connection to Hawai’i. If they collect all 12, they can earn a large humuhumuunukunukuapua’a pin and achieve true Hawai’i Explore status. Montage Merits activities include spotting a whale, hiking the coastal trail and surfing.

Nov 5, 2025How to Give Back on Your Next Maui Vacation
The island of Maui is known for its sun-quenched beaches and lush tropical landscape, but it is also known for the destructive wildfire that devastated communities in 2023. A few years may have passed, but the island is still working to recover from the damage. One of the best ways to help a destination after it has experienced a natural disaster is by continuing to support the tourism economy in a responsible way. There are great ways to do that through voluntourism, even for family travelers.
