Domestic destinations aren’t the only places going all out for Halloween; family travelers venturing abroad this October can partake in fun activities and festivities this Halloween, too.
Oct. 2–Nov. 5, discover what lies beneath the waves in the Haunted Sea during this seasonally spooky installation at Gulf Georgia Cannery National Hispanic Site. Explore the ocean’s depths and encounter colorful creatures made from upcycled material. The Halloween event in the Herring Reduction Plant area features a creepy cornucopia of sea creatures and ocean-themed exhibits created from recycled materials.
The Pumpkin Patch at Richmond County Farms features farm animals, live music, hayrides, displays of sunflowers, corn stocks and old-fashioned wooden buildings. Ticket prices include a wagon ride, Spartan apple and a pumpkin of your choice.
For a festive shopping experience, the Halloween Community Event & Artisan Market takes place Oct. 21 at LuLu Island Winery. The free event features local Canadian artisans such as Gourmet Groceries Canada, free trick-or-treating for kids and hot beverages.
From Salem to Rome, City Experiences offers numerous spooky and fun-filled tours perfect for Halloween travel. Those who aren’t squeamish can explore the Crypts, Bones & Catacombs: An Underground Tour of Rome or the Skip-the-Line Paris Catacombs Special Access Tour and head underground for a history lesson and bone-chilling experience with skeletal remains.
On Halloween in Costa Rica, the destination calls for dressing up in large, elaborate masks. The tradition started in 1996 when the country’s government declared the last day of the month Día de la Mascarada Tradicional Costarricense or Day of the Traditional Costa Rican Masquerade. Traditionally, the masquerade is associated with popular festivals, school fairs, parties to raise money for a specific cause, and other activities.
