Families also can stargaze by the bonfire and hear stories of how sailors and pirates navigated the seas. Other experiences include pirate school with sword-fighting lessons, non-alcoholic rum making, sailing lessons and a cooking class. Take Me on a Story to Alaska: A Trip Inspired by Call of the Wild

Find your inner survivor in the Alaskan wilderness, the same landscape that inspired Jack London’s acclaimed novel. Navigate glaciers by raft, pan for gold with historians and fly helicopters and floatplanes to remote lodges and cabins. Like Buck, guests can practice their survival and outdoor skills with a customized survival course, ice climbing, rappelling and dog-mushing. Families also learn about the importance of conservation with interactive encounters with wildlife, as well as a storytelling session accompanied by a campfire dinner. For nine nights, guests stay at Sheldon Chalet, Winterlake Lodge and Hotel Alyeska.

Chart the course of Jules Verne’s story in Iceland, where activities include sailing across glacial lagoons, swimming into the earth’s crust and descending dormant volcanoes. An expert guide leads guests through riddles and challenges designed to test the physical and mental strength of those daring enough to join. Families learn outdoor skill-building tricks such as fire making. Decipher clues with experiences selected from the book to explore otherworldly settings like the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, lava caves, Silfra Fissure and Jökulsárlón glacier. This six-night itinerary includes stays at Sandhotel, Hotel Húsafell, Hotel Kria and Torfus.

Prices for itineraries do not include flights. Black Tomato can also create a bespoke trip based on any other children’s book.
