The older we get the more difficult it can be to get the whole family together on a trip, so make the most of it and pack in an active and fun multigenerational trip.
Between Austria’s rich history, chic urban life and incredible outdoor adventure, this country is one that will please the whole family. Stroll through quaint villages, open-air markets, Imperial palaces, 11th-century fortresses and charming cafés that once played host to artists and intellectuals of the highest regard.
Innsbruck
For families looking to ski, snowboard and enjoy rustic lodging amid epic mountain landscapes, check out Innsbruck. Even less-active family members enjoy sightseeing along the stunning Alpine terrain while dining in quaint cafés in town.
Take the artsy kids to town, perusing modern art museums, or head out on foot through the medieval metropolis, exploring 16th-century castles and Gothic architecture.
Salzburg
Enjoy more of the arts and finer things visiting Mozart’s birthplace, Salzburg. Located along the border of the German Alps, this city boasts Imperial history, lush natural beauty and modern comforts.
Head out shopping on a leisurely day about town, taking in folklore, endless palace and cathedral tours or the city’s vast layout of Imperial gardens. Stroll along the Salzach River observing medieval buildings, Baroque cathedrals and the Old City, or Altstadt, before stopping in Mozart’s childhood home for a musical tour all ages can appreciate.

Take a break from walking and ride the funicular while visiting the Hohensalzburg Castle. Hohensalzburg is a top tourist destination for good reason. The kids can check out the prince’s chambers and magic theater while the rest of the family takes in the history, ornate design and amazing view of town below.
Vienna
For families looking for buzzing nightlife, daily attractions and upscale charm, a visit to Vienna is a must while in Austria. Take in the city’s art history and high-end shopping while dining in a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Vienna adds a touch of luxury and charm for the whole family and there is always something to do.
Hallstatt
The quaint town of Hallstatt looks like something out of a Thomas Kinkade painting. The 16th-century architecture and tight alleyways seem charming from ground level, but become even more picturesque in contrast with the surrounding mountain range, reaching an elevation higher than 1,500 feet.
Take the family on a tour through Salzwelten, an ancient salt mine with a subterranean salt lake connected by railway. Put your hard hats on and explore the mine’s tunnels and walkable attractions by the glow of your flashlight. Step out on the Skywalk Hallstatt viewing platform for a birds-eye view of the town.

Enjoy the view from above before heading back down below following trails leading to the Echern Valley glacier garden. Echern Valley’s beautiful glacial potholes and Waldbachstrub Waterfall are not to be missed — not to mention, both are a great walking tour and photo op.
Austria offers something for every traveler, from sweeping beauty and historic palaces to charming cafes and hillside vineyards. From Vienna to Graz, Hallstatt, Salzburg and back again, there is ample to see, do and experience together in Austria.
