A powerful new exhibit is coming to National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel for family travelers to Memphis. The museum has acquired the archive of Bayard Rustin, a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Museum and an advocate for non-violence, human rights and equality. To honor the collection, the Speaking Truth to Power: The Life of Bayard Rustin exhibit opens March 28, for eight months, in the State of Tennessee Gallery.
The exhibit examines his public and private life with artifacts, fine art photography and personal items from his archive. Rustin’s life partner Walter Naegle provided the direction and access to more than 500 personal items.
“This exhibition is more than a tribute to Bayard Rustin’s achievements. It is a testament to his enduring message of justice, dialogue, and non-violence that continues to resonate today,” said Dr. Russ Wigginton, president, National Civil Rights Museum.
The exhibit includes passports, visas and driver’s licenses that document Rustin’s global commitment to non-violence; artifacts of his activism, like his notes for a March on Washington for Civil Rights and more; personal items such as folk art from his childhood in West Chester, Pennsylvania; and intimate memorabilia, like letters, jewelry and personal gifts.
Art historian and educator Gay Feldman curated the exhibit.
