New Zealand might seem like one of those quaint, quiet countries with green moors and hobbit homes — which, sure, some locations are exactly like that — but it definitely has its luxury side, as well. Before your next family trip, check out this line-up of new, high-end stays throughout New Zealand with a fun variety of themes and amenities.

Located on the South Island in Dunedin, the Wains Hotel offers a Victorian look, matching the town’s eclectic heritage. The city is known for its Maori and Scottish roots, which the Wains Hotel did well to keep in mind. Stay in a comfortable and spacious suite in the heart of town with easy access to local city attractions as well as hiking trails, biking routes and visiting the incredibly scenic Otago Harbour, including sightings of sea lions and native penguins.

For a rare opportunity, stay in the country’s first 6-star hotel. The Park Hyatt Auckland opens this year, offering high luxury on Wynyard Quarter in Auckland. The immense project will include 195 guestrooms, more than 300,000 square feet and open space along the Viaduct Harbour. Set to open in the summer, guest can enjoy the city, waterfront attractions and Park Hyatt brand amenities — the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Also in Auckland, the Heritage Collection Waitakere Estate opened fall of last year and offers a secluded, rainforest vibe, with added luxuries and incredible services. Book a family stay in any of the eight Premium Suites with unbeatable views overlooking the wilderness, or get something spacious and impeccably designed on the lavish poolside of the resort. Enjoy all the remote peacefulness of the wild landscape with walks and dinner-side views, but with the added attention of fine dining, amenities and easy access to the rest of the city.

Over in Queenstown, Eichardt’s Private Hotel acquired a luxury yacht, opened in the fall as a truly unique getaway for families and couples. Eichardt’s, now operating the Pacific Jemm luxury cruiser, is a private charter cruise accommodation boasting three apartments called Elms on Lake Hayes villas. Guests can stay on the water and enjoy high-end digs with views from starboard to portside.

Situated in one of the more scenic and completely magical regions of the country, Cabot Lodge is located on the border of Fiordland National Park. A true getaway from reality and the hustle and bustle of the city, Fiordland vistas offer unending beauty for families looking to sit back and relax. Guests enjoy a farm-style lodge with elevated cuisine, impeccable service and breathtaking views. The older kids can enjoy fine local wines and the well-known restaurant culture the area offers or get active with local boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking opportunities and helicopter tours. Thrillseekers welcome.

Over on the West Coast, for families looking for a small-town, farm-style stay and simple tranquility, Cowshed 488 is a viable option. The boutique farm-stay opened in the fall and includes a working farm with cattle and enough room for six guests. Check out recent reviews before booking your family getaway to the New Zealand countryside.
