South Africa is an epic destination for a safari adventure, but if you’re thinking of travel to this beautiful country, you’ll want to take time to experience the other things that make it an ideal place for family travels.
The South African landscape is diverse and beautiful, making it the perfect place for families who love to explore nature. The coastline is vast and rugged and offers a variety of experiences, from fishing, kayaking and sailing in Plettenberg Bay to taking a scenic drive along the waterfront through areas like the Cape Peninsula. Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town (a perfect stop if you are taking a scenic drive along the peninsula) offers incredible hiking opportunities, giving you beautiful views of the city and Atlantic Ocean in the distance.
South Africa isn’t just home to stunning coastal areas. Sites like the Cango Caves, one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions, let you explore some of the regions unique geology and history. Multiple rooms of the caves feature spectacular stalagmite and stalactite formations, culminating in the main attraction, the African Drum Room. The caves offer two tours, The Heritage Tour and the Adventure Tour. While the Heritage Tour offers an easy trek ideal for families, the Adventure Tour’s extremely tight spaces are designed for those with advanced skills and extremely high fitness levels.
The Cango Caves are believed to have been formed some 20 million years ago and have been used by the inhabitants of the area for centuries, but there are also plenty of ways to discover South Africa’s unique history that don’t involve descending into the depths of the earth.
On the country’s eastern coast, you will find a fascinating glimpse into the region’s Zulu history by paying a visit to Shakaland in KwaZulu-Natal. The largest kraal (village of huts) in Zululand, this is the birthplace of the legendary Zulu chief, Shaka, who founded the Zulu Empire. This site was used for the filming of the movie, Shaka Zulu, and has since been turned into a major cultural attraction for visitors looking to learn about the Zulu Empire’s history, contributions to society and way of life.
