Halloween is right around the corner, which means its time to start making plans for spooky and scary stops for having fun with the family this fall. New York’s Cayuga County is always a fun visit for family travelers, but if you plan on being in the area this October, you will definitely want to explore its haunted history with some choice spots along New York’s Haunted History Trail. This curated list of haunted and spooky stops throughout New York features incredible locations showcasing the perfect combination of the state’s beautiful charm and fascinating history.
A visit to Seward House, located in Auburn, takes you to the home-turned-museum of William H. Seward. During the 19th century, this prominent family was a great influence on local society, with William serving his local community in politics and his wife, Frances, supporting the Women’s Rights Movement and hiding runaway slaves within the confines of this infamous home.
The family was also no stranger to spooky encounters, and some of their lore is shared with guests during the Haunted History Tour. Guides take groups through the house, its grounds and even to the nearby Fort Hills Cemetery while sharing tales of local true crime history, Seward family folklore and stories about Victorian-era funeral practices that were more than a bit macabre. Tours require an appointment and must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.
The Fingerlakes Mall is another must along your haunted tour of Cayuga County. While there are plenty of great shops to visit at this mall, it also happens to be considered one of the most haunted spots in Auburn. More than 200 EVPs have reportedly been captured by paranormal investigators, and visitors and ghost hunters alike report sightings and encounters. Whether you are looking for a chance to catch an EVP of your own or simply enjoy some shopping therapy in an infamously haunted mall, this is the perfect place to visit. After-hours tours can be specially scheduled by contacting the mall.
