Sunny days, palm trees, golden-sand beaches, tropical breezes and ocean waves to play in — it’s hard to find a better vacation spot than Hawai’i for your family’s winter travels. You have the choice of several islands, each with its own allure.
Oahu
Flying into the state, you’ll probably land in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. Along with the attractions in the capital itself, you can relax on the iconic Waikiki Beach and absorb some American history at Pearl Harbor National Memorial.
Maui
The dormant volcano of Mount Haleakala, which forms much of the island, offers varied environments to explore, from stark volcanic landscapes to semi-tropical rainforests. Golfers will appreciate the courses in Maui, and if you go in February, you can join Pacific Whale Foundation in celebrating the return of whales at the Maui Whale Festival.
The Big Island
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is the place to see volcanoes in action, with steaming craters and molten lava flowing into the sea. Stand on the rim of the steaming Halema’uma’u crater, legendary home of Pele, Hawai’i’s fire goddess. Learn more about island traditions at Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.
Kauai
Known for its tropical gardens, five of which are open to tour, Kauai is quieter than the well-known beach holiday islands and perfect for those who love nature and outdoor activities. Hike trails to dramatic waterfalls and explore the Na Pali coast landscapes, where Jurassic Park filmed.

Mortensen Riverfront Plaza is at the center, with a riverfront stage and a hillside of grassy terraces where as many as 2,500 people gather to watch the dragon boats during the annual Riverfront Asian Festival in August.
