Safety is top of mind for family travelers interested in a cycling vacation. The cycling experts at IceBike studied 10 years of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to determine the safest U.S. states for cyclists. The number of cyclist deaths rose from 4,302 in 2010 to 6,205 in 2019. It is more important than ever to consider safe locations when bicycling.
The study looked at which states had the lowest percentage of cyclist deaths according to population. Nebraska ranked in the top spot for safest states. Between 2010 and 2019, there were 15 people killed in cycling accidents in the state, marking the lowest rate in the country and 67 percent below the national average. South Dakota came in second, with one of the lowest percentages of cyclist deaths compared to total traffic fatalities. Massachusetts rounds out the top 10, with 1.28 cyclist deaths per 100,000 people, still 48 percent lower than the national average.

While the Italian carrier is relatively new to the U.S. market, launching its first New York (JFK)–Milan (MXP) flights in 2021, it now counts Rome (FCO); Palermo (PMO); and Bari, Puglia (BRI) (as of June 2025) as destinations from New York. It has also established a niche as an affordable carrier with premium attributes and a soft spot for family travelers.
