Located in the Salish Sea between the state of Washington and Canada’s Vancouver Island, San Juan Island is the perfect family travel pairing of relaxation and fun. The island features plenty of outdoor adventure, from great hikes and kayaking to whale watching, not to mention some fascinating sites to see that will make your trip one to remember.
Be sure to spend some time discovering Roche Harbor, the picturesque seaside village on the northern tip of the island. In addition to beautiful views off the coast, Roche Harbor offers plenty of shops and eateries to explore. While there, you can visit Sculpture Park, a unique, 20-acre outdoor park decorated with more than 150 sculptures and statues. The park serves as a great space for a picnic and plenty of photo opportunities. The Sculpture Garden is open daily from sunup to sundown and adults are asked to give a $5 donation for admission.
On the other side of the island, English Camp and American Camp are great options for learning about the local history. Located in San Juan Island National Historical Park, these two historic sites date back to the mid-1800s when Great Britain and the United States agreed to a joint occupation of the island.
Alpacas may not be often associated with the Pacific Northwest, but there are certainly plenty of them enjoying the fresh sea air and lush greenery of the island. For a wonderful opportunity to meet these peaceful, playful creatures, visit Krystal Acres where you can not only observe them roaming the farm’s beautiful pastures, but you can also pick up some luxurious souvenirs made from alpaca fiber to remember your incredible trip to this beautiful island.
