Ski season is upon us, meaning those anticipated winter trips to top ski destinations across the country await. Family travelers still in the planning stages of a ski trip should look no further than Wyoming. Whether you’re a family of expert skiers or beginners on the slopes, there’s plenty of places in the state to enjoy a ski getaway this winter.
Laramie
This offbeat college town’s deep Western roots and vibrant cultural scene aren’t the only draws to the area. Snowy Range Ski Area is perfect for a laid-back family ski trip, with both beginner and intermediate runs. The area offers 250 skiable acres and two terrain parks, with adult season passes starting at $429.
Shell
Rich with history and geological formations dating back more than 2 billion years (there’s even a rare Jurassic dinosaur track), Shell is also home to the small but mighty Antelope Butte Ski Area. This ski area features three lifts, 28 trails and a heated yurt. Shell gives a more rural vibe with a population of about 72, meaning families seeking an escape from the crowds will find peace here. Full-day tickets can be purchased online for $54 or $44 for a half-day ski.
Cody
Great American adventures await in Cody, where deer and bison roam free and where moose, mountain sheep, elk and bears can also be spotted. Sleeping Giant Ski Area boasts 184 acres and a 6,619-foot vertical drop on the ski hill, located just 3 miles from Yellowstone National Park. This affordable resort features 49 runs of different skill levels and two terrain parks. Full-day lift tickets start at $59 and half-day tickets start at $48.
Pinedale
Called “The Real Wyoming” by local residents, this area sits at the base of the Wind River Mountains and features alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding and more. Over at White Pine Ski Area, one of the oldest in the state, skiers can take on 25 different runs across 350 acres.
Casper
Casper is a skier’s dream come winter, offering some of the best ski slopes in the state. Hit up Hogadon Basin Ski Area, complete with 60 acres of groomed slopes and 15 miles of Nordic trails. The ski area also welcomes new skiers with an all-inclusive learning package at the snow school, which includes rentals, a half-day lesson and lift ticket.
Cokeville
A local favorite for Wyoming skiers, Pine Creek Area features 30 diverse runs, more than 1,400 vertical feet and short lift lines. Keep in mind the nearest accommodations are located about 50 miles away in Kemmerer.
