Destinations / North America

Looking for the best stargazing destination for your next family travels? Look no further than Wyoming. Thanks to its low population and minimal light pollution, the state offers clear views of constellations, planets and the Milky Way, from Killpecker Sand Dunes to Jackson Hole. Here’s a quick guide to Wyoming stargazing spots:

Fremont County

Head to Sinks Canyon State Park, Wyoming’s first International Dark Sky Park, for a variety of astronomy hikes.

Sweetwater County

Killpecker Sand dunes offer a beautiful landscape for night sky viewing. This high desert location allows for clear skies and views of the Milky Way. These dunes are one of the only seven “singing” sand dunes in the world. Keep an ear open to hear the sand grains creating musical sounds when distributed by wind or footsteps.

Teton County

Teton County is home to Wyoming Stargazing, a nonprofit that hosts public telescope nights in Jackson. Wyoming Stargazing offers all the stargazing fun along with educational talks on astrophysics and Indigenous astronomy.

Jackson Hole

This area is located within the world’s first officially designated Dark Sky County, meaning it has some of the best and most clear stargazing skies. It’s also home to Snow King Observatory, a mountain-top planetarium experience for travelers of all ages.

Other popular destinations include Hot Springs State Park, Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Vedauwoo Recreation Area, Devils Tower National Monument and Grand Teton National Park.
