Spring is upon us and, as many of the world’s gardens and fields begin to blossom, it can be tempting to venture outside the United States to witness iconic blooms. But there are some very vibrant domestic destinations with just as beautiful flowers and, with flower tourism on the rise in the United States, family travelers can save money (and time) by venturing to any (or all) of these five spots around the country to see flowers in bloom.
Here, you’ll find a dynamic display of many alpine blooms. In fact, the destination is the reason it’s called the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Crested Butte also hosts the annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival (July), celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. During the festival, you can participate in hikes, tours, workshops and more.
Ennis Bluebonnet Trails, Texas
This 40-plus-mile trail south of Dallas is known as the Bluebonnet City of Texas and, each spring, the trail transforms into sweeping blankets of blues and purples as the bluebonnets blossom.
Falling Waters State Park, Florida
In Chipley, Florida, this state park not only boasts Florida’s tallest waterfall but also a butterfly garden and plants like purple cornflowers, coreopsis, black-eyed susans and Queen Anne’s lace.
Embrace rugged terrain full of towering saguaros and desert flowers, including California poppies, golden brittlebush and lupines. These flowers bloom thanks to spring rainfall, and many visitors flock to the park to take in the native flowers and plants in their prime.
Willow Creek Trail, Colorado
Another Colorado spot to admire flowers is this trail in Roxborough State Park, which features open meadows and forests where flowers like Indian paintbrush, sunflowers and lupines dazzle with their bold colors.
These destinations were ranked by Spinblitz, factoring in online popularity and colorfulness, as well as Instagram hashtags and Google ratings. Colorfulness was determined by how vibrant/colorful the flowers are using a colorfulness detection algorithm.
