Destinations / North America

Valentine’s Day is a good excuse for parents to take a weekend getaway and break from family travel with kids. You don’t need to travel far to find a romantic country inn or B&B; they are scattered throughout the United States and Canada. From New Hampshire to South Carolina, you’ll find a warm welcome this winter at these cozy inns.

Notchland Inn, New Hampshire
Deep in the White Mountains, the stone house of Notchland Inn has been a familiar landmark to travelers for more than a century. Today, the inn is a luxurious retreat for couples. Choose from the lushly decorated rooms in the main house, or hide away in one of the recently added cabins in the woods. Real woodburning fireplaces, comfortable seating, rich color tones and double Jacuzzis make these rooms as luxurious as the antique-furnished guestrooms in the main house. Either way, you can relax in the inn’s solarium and savor breakfast and dinner in the dining room overlooking views of the snowy woods.

The Grafton Inn, Vermont
In the center of the too-cute village of Grafton, in central Vermont, Grafton Inn has been a haven for travelers since 1801, but its age only shows in the beautiful antiques and fine art decorating the property. Rooms have all the mod-cons, with an elevator taking guests to the upper floors of the historic building. Relax by the fire with a book or game in the gracious parlors or bundle up and walk around the picturesque village. The farm-to-table restaurant is one of Vermont’s best.

Landmark Inn, New York
The 11-room Landmark Inn in Cooperstown has been named one of the top small hotels in North America, with individually decorated rooms, spa showers, fireplaces and luxurious beds. The most romantic room is the Chance Suite, with its own private entrance and porch and spacious seating area. If a little sightseeing is on your agenda, Cooperstown’s attractions, from art glass to baseball, are right nearby.

Fairville Inn, Pennsylvania
Spend a day admiring the orchids and basking in the tropical atmosphere of Longwood Gardens’ Conservatory before returning to the cozy warmth of Fairville Inn in Chadds Ford. Guestrooms in the gracious home and carriage house are decorated with a European flair, with soft colors and comfortable armchairs for lounging in front of gas fireplaces. Breakfast is superb, and you won’t want to miss the abundance of fresh-baked pastries and treats at teatime.

Clevedale Inn, South Carolina
Even in winter, the gardens and towering trees surrounding Clevedale Inn in Spartanburg are worthy of a stroll. All guestrooms in the gracious home are decorated in antiques and furnishings that speak to its history as the centerpiece of a southern estate. But most romantic of all is the MackRail Cabin Car, a 1947 Southern Rail Caboose transformed into a queen bedroom suite. Sitting on real railroad tracks, next to English Knot Garden, the car is fitted with a custom queen-sized bed and a seating area with swivel chairs. In the morning, tuck into a hearty Southern-inspired breakfast.
