Multigenerational

This year alone has seen a 1,029 percent increase in Google searches for “family holidays 2025,” and more and more family travelers opt for multigenerational vacations. Traveling with different generations can be challenging though, so selecting the right destination and going prepared is essential.

Maria Hughes, a travel expert at Good to Go, a specialist travel insurance provider, shared six tips for booking a successful multigen trip this year.

Save Money and Skip Summer

Summer can be a particularly expensive time of year for large groups thanks to high temperatures. While it may seem the most convenient with kids out of school, opt for other times in the year when schools offer week-long breaks like fall break, Easter and spring break.

Avoid Hot Climates

Coinciding with summer travel is warmer weather. High temperatures can pose health problems for both older and younger members of the group, as well as those with pre-existing medical conditions. Consider these factors before selecting a time and destination.

Consider Destination Dupes

Keep the cost down by heading to locations promising just as much fun as their more expensive counterparts. For instance, consider places like Montenegro, Bulgaria or the Albanian riviera for a European trip instead of Spain or Croatia. Many Western European destinations are more expensive than Eastern and Central European cities. Or, for an Italy multigen vacation, why not go to Sicily instead of the Cinque Terre?

Keep Accessible Amenities in Mind

If you’re traveling with relatives with accessibility requirements, it’s important to book accommodations suitable for them, such as ground-floor guestrooms and suites, or, if on another floor, staying in a building with an elevator. Be sure to also factor in the actual destination; some cities are far more accessible than others. Many European cities, for instance, are hilly and feature steep steps and streets. It’s also essential to consider elements like transportation and activities, too.

Remember Destination Practicality

If you’re traveling with young children or relatives with mobility limitations or health issues, find a destination where traveling long distances on foot isn’t a requirement. Don’t forget about flight times, too, as young children and older relatives may get uncomfortable on longer flights.

Plan for Everyone’s Interests

It’s practically a given: Everyone on a group trip will have different interests. During the planning stages, be sure to discuss everyone’s needs and wants for the vacation. Ensure there’s plenty of activity options available at your resort or location with easy access to daytrips.
