Finding the right destination to cater to all age groups can sometimes be difficult for family travelers, but Wisconsin offers a wide variety of great family-friendly cities for those looking for a Midwest vacation this year. Here are six Wisconsin cities to consider adding to your family’s travels in 2023:
Calling all Foodies to Hudson
Located on the outskirts of Minneapolis, this town sits on the St. Croix River and features a downtown perfect for history lovers, foodies and those simply looking for a nice river cruise. Considered one of Wisconsin’s best destinations for culinary options, Hudson offers the Hudson Food Walk, a three-hour guided tour showcasing the town’s best food and beverages, incorporating the history of the city with each stop. The tour runs every weekend, with tickets including tastings of six of the most popular spots.
Outdoor Lover’s Paradise in Sheboygan
Made for multigenerational travel, Sheboygan offers year-round surfing for all ages. The city’s location on Lake Michigan also makes for great walks and swims. Also in Sheboygan, Maywood Environmental Park teaches kids about nature and encourages them to further connect with their surroundings with various programs offered year-round.
Swiss Heritage in New Glarus
Nicknamed America’s Little Switzerland, New Glarus features Swiss-inspired buildings and restaurants harkening back to its founding in the early 19th century. Stay at a traditional Swiss inn and enjoy authentic food and beverages at Chalet Landhaus Restaurant. Walking downtown includes hearing Swiss music, especially when nearing Glarner Stube, a private and romantic restaurant decorated with hand-carved Swiss objects.
Educational Fun in Berlin
Berlin, located along Fox River, boasts a rich history as the center for French fur traders in the 18th century. In addition to a long history, Berlin features parks, a historic district and streets lined with Victorian-era homes. At Berlin Bottling Works, guests step inside a building that was once a carriage house. The space takes visitors back in time through displays of ice harvesting equipment, sculptures of Indian heritage and print shop equipment.
Adventure Tours in Kewaunee
Head on a walking tour of this city’s historic district or embark on a self-guided adventure visiting lighthouses. Located just outside Green Bay on Lake Michigan, there’s several lighthouses to explore in the area, as well as a tour where visitors can explore the tugboat Ludington, which served in the D-Day invasion.
Farmers Market Excitement in Stevens Point
This central Wisconsin town is not only a college town but also a bustling area full of culinary delights and fun activities. Peruse Stevens Point Farmers Market, the state’s oldest farmers market, to buy fresh items grown from Wisconsin soil. This market was established in 1847 and is a great family activity. Families also love Father Fats Public House, a spot blending national and international cuisines through shareable plates highlighting local ingredients. The city’s location on the Wisconsin River also means plenty of activities both in and out of the water.
