Travel Tips

Traveling to Israel with the family soon? We can make packing a lot easier with a few go-to tips on what to bring for your active teens and adult children.

First things first — check the weather. While summer can be hot and humid, winter will definitely bring a chill. Plan for the season and amount of outdoor activity scheduled, including hikes, beaching and city exploring. Light layers, simple mix-and-match styles and moisture-wicking materials are always key, especially for long days out and about.

For the Weather

For multicity trips, expect different climates as you go. For example, Tel Aviv may be more humid than Jerusalem, which is on higher ground and typically on the dyer side. For this hiccup, make sure the kids know to bring a light sweater or jacket for day-to-night activities.

For the Beach

One article of clothing you should start with so you don’t forget: a swimsuit. Floating in the Dead Sea would be tricky without one and Israel’s stunning beaches and Mediterranean waters are not to be missed. Ladies, bring a cover-up and, everyone, bring sturdy sandals to maneuver the varied terrain and acceptable public dress. Especially in more conservative regions, ladies are expected to dress modestly, so bringing a wrap-around skirt can be ideal.

For Tours

Speaking of public dress, plan for more modest outfits when visiting the Holy Land and other ultra-religious neighborhoods. Women especially have to remember to cover up in orthodox locales with ankle-to-wrist-to-collarbone-covered attire. Plan for long sleeves and pants for these excursions, as a sign of respect for the community’s beliefs. Having an itinerary of what days you’ll be visiting what holy sites can be a lifesaver while packing.

For Every Day

For everywhere else, pack casual, but not sloppy, skirts, shorts, shirts, dresses and pants to cover all dining, shopping and day-to-night activities. Having an itinerary can help determine your wardrobe, as each city’s weather and activities may vary. Think classic, simple pieces that can go day to night while being appropriate for shopping days, alfresco dining and tours.

Depending on the region you’re visiting and season, simple, interchangeable pieces are best. Think light, cool clothing for summer days, layering pieces for any time of year, a sweater or two for chilly desert nights and a few modest staples for various religious tours.

Don’t forget comfortable shoes! There will be a lot of walking on this trip and, especially for kids and older travelers, you’ll have to be mindful of the varied terrain.
