Budget

In a small corner of southern Italy, nestled between Pozzuoli and Torre del Greco, Naples sits along the Gulf that feeds out into the Tyrrhenian Sea and boasts some of the best of Italy — think authentic pizza and incredible Italian cuisine culture, cityscapes and historic sites, stunning coastlines and natural beauty.

Suffice to say the city boasts incredible views from all angles. Snap some pics (for free) and get your family photos early in the day before all the walking and eating.

First Thing’s First …

Visit Mount Vesuvius and the surrounding booming city — no pun intended — with the kids and take in the world of art, architecture and everything in between. Sure, all this activity sounds like a lot of dollar signs flying out of your wallet, but it doesn’t have to be. Plan for a full day with the family with this travel-savvy list of things to do well within your budget.

Strap on your comfortable shoes, rough-and-ready clothing and explore — earn your pizza and vino later.

Play it Fast and Loose, But Do Your Homework

Don’t go crazy booking tours and excursions for your trip. Naples is easily walkable and self-guided. Do some research beforehand and get the lay of the land while in your English-speaking home before being thrown into the Italian streets of Naples. With a little planning, you can be your own guide for some must-hit spots.

One of which, Mount Vesuvius, is actually still active and was famously the volcano that destroyed the nearby Roman town Pompeii. While the ruins may be ancient history, they are still on display for travelers and historians, preserved in perfect condition on Pompeii — a short bus ride from Naples. You can get your steps in hiking the trails with the kids along the volcano, learning all about the region’s history, before heading back to the city for a much-earned pizza — and Aperol Spritz for you.

Don’t Pressure Yourselves to “Do it All”

Explore the city with the family on your own, stopping in the many open-air cafés and markets as you see them. Shop around and keep your budget in mind. Some shops can still haggle, while others are more established. Be choosey in your purchases and if you’re wavering on a few things, make a point to go back on your last day and see if it still catches your eye.

Keep an eye out for the city’s three castles, incredible royal palace and more cathedrals and churches than you will have time to visit. Pick and choose which you would like to tour if you want to save your pennies for later.

Be Prepared to Walk

It’s Italy, after all, and everyone (who can) should be prepared to hoof it. While the entire city is pretty pedestrian-friendly, the Longmore is basically made for explorers on foot. The two-mile promenade lines the water, boasting unbeatable views, along with plenty of attractions, restaurants and seaside fun.
